Arsene Wenger: Premier League is 'world championship of managers'
The ESPN FC crew assess Arsenal's mounting defensive issues just a week away from the start of the EPL season.Aside from being a destination for top players, the Premier League has become a "world championship of managers" as well, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says.
Wenger is entering his 21st season in charge of Arsenal, but many of his top Premier League rivals will be managed by new faces this season.
And the Frenchman said he expected the arrival of the likes of Antonio Conte and Pep Guardiola to make the competition more difficult than it has in the past.
"Everybody's ambitious -- never has the Premier League been gifted with so many ambitious people or clubs at the start of the season," Wenger told Arsenal Player.
Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho have long had a testy relationship."We have [Jose] Mourinho at Manchester United, Conte at Chelsea, Guardiola at Man City, [Jurgen] Klopp at Liverpool, so it's a little bit a world championship of managers as well.
"Everybody will of course be highly focused on doing well and it will be interesting. One thing you know from the start: not everybody can win the championship and next year, more than ever, it will be tougher for everybody.
"But sometimes the media give too much importance to the managers and I believe that what is important is the quality of the players on the pitch.
"All English teams compete highly to be competitive and have a top squad."
電視轉播費用使英超球會財力比其他聯賽強，另相對平均的費用分配，使即便是下游球隊的財力亦不比其他聯賽的豪門遜色。因而英超球球近年的實力相對接近，近乎場場硬仗。而本土聯賽的激烈性質使傳統強隊過度消耗，在歐聯賽上經常是疲兵作戰，造成英超球隊於歐聯的下滑。比起其他聯賽的強隊，每年只有六七場硬仗，英超則是38場全部都是，就是曼聯請了摩佬，下年亦難保前四位置，因此倒希望曼聯給傑斯一個機會。
