Given the number of US listed Chinese companies, the individual likelihood of an SEC investigation at any one company (including Silvercorp) is clearly quite low.  Yet as we saw with EDU, the simple announcement of an investigation by the SEC (regardless of its severity) could have a dramatic effect on the share price.  EDU fell by more than 40% even though no details of the SEC investigation were provided.  Given the recent halts at CAST, SCEI, CVVT, DEER, SGOC and HEAT, it seems intuitive that short sellers would be agitating for any sort of SEC investigation, even if it was a relatively minor one.
